"I'm not sure whether I need coaching."

That is one of the most common things I hear during initial consultations. Many people imagine coaching as something for when things are going wrong — when they are facing a big problem or a crisis.

In reality, coaching is not only for difficult situations. It is often most valuable precisely when you want to better understand yourself, make an important decision, or move forward in an area that matters to you.

What is personal coaching?

Personal coaching is a collaborative conversation focused on development, decision-making and finding your own answers.

A coach does not give advice or make decisions for the client. They create space for thinking, ask questions, and support the client in finding solutions that fit their values, possibilities and life situation.

The goal is not to tell people what to do. The goal is to help them understand themselves better and make more conscious decisions.

When does personal coaching make sense?

There are many situations where coaching can be useful. The most common topics include:

  • important life decisions
  • changing jobs or professional direction
  • uncertainty and looking for the next step
  • building confidence
  • navigating change
  • leadership and managing people
  • finding greater satisfaction
  • balancing work and personal life

You do not need to arrive with a clearly defined goal. Sometimes a feeling that you want to change something — or simply need to better understand a situation — is enough.

When you are standing at a crossroads

Some periods of life bring more questions than answers. You may be thinking about changing jobs. Considering a new role. Returning to work after parental leave. Wondering which direction to develop in next.

In situations like these, having a space where you can slow down, organise your thoughts and look at things from a new perspective tends to be genuinely useful.

When you know you want a change, but don't know what kind

The most common thing clients say is not:

"I want to change jobs."

Or:

"I want to become a manager."

It is usually much simpler:

"I know I need to change something. I just don't know what."

Coaching helps you find your bearings when all you have is a feeling of dissatisfaction, uncertainty or confusion. You do not need to know the solution in advance. Finding it is part of the process.

When self-doubt is holding you back

Many capable people are not held back by a lack of knowledge or experience. They are held back by their own doubts. For example:

  • fear of making a mistake
  • fear of rejection
  • low self-confidence
  • perfectionism
  • a need to have everything under control

Coaching does not offer simple fixes. But it does help uncover patterns of thinking that may be limiting you — and explore new ways of working with them.

When you want to make better use of your strengths

Many people spend a large part of their life trying to improve their weaknesses. But it is just as important to recognise and develop your natural strengths.

When you know:

  • what you are naturally good at
  • what gives you energy
  • what kind of environment suits you
  • what motivates you

you can make decisions with greater confidence and ease. That is why in my work I often combine coaching with working on strengths and talents.

Coaching is not therapy

This question comes up fairly often. Coaching and therapy have different purposes.

Therapy often focuses on processing past experiences, psychological difficulties or deeper personal topics. Coaching is oriented primarily towards the present and the future. It helps explore possibilities, set goals and supports people in working towards them.

Both approaches have their place and can complement each other.

How do you know if coaching is right for you?

You may not need coaching if you already know clearly:

  • what you want
  • how to get there
  • and you have enough energy to take the necessary steps

But if you:

  • are facing an important decision
  • are looking for a new direction
  • want to better understand yourself
  • want to feel more confident in your decisions
  • or want to move forward

coaching can be a useful form of support.

Coaching is not about having perfect answers

Many people put off the first step because they feel they should already have a clear plan. In reality, arriving with a question is often enough. A topic that is on your mind. A feeling that you want something to change.

Coaching is not about someone else finding the answer for you. It is about creating a space where you can find answers that make sense for you.
